About the Show
Opening the 2018-2019 season is Leo Lionni’s Frederick, CCT’s world premiere musical based on beloved children’s author Leo Lionni’s Caldecott Award-winning book about Frederick the mouse.
This new staging is a raucous and playful musical adaptation, featuring six actor-musicians playing spirited folk and blues music.
While other mice are gathering food for the winter, Frederick daydreams the summer away. When dreary weather comes, it is Frederick who has stored up something special for the long cold winter. The classic, much-loved early reading book celebrates the idea that there is a place for all of us in this world.
Recommended for All Ages.
Frederick Extended Experience Workshops

$50 – Enroll in the Frederick Musical Theatre Workshop
Students! Join us in November for a musical theatre workshop based around Frederick. Under the direction of Teaching Artist Nicole Laurenzi (who plays Nellie, and who you may have seen in the Mama Mia! national tour) students will learn a song and dance scene from the show and then perform for family and friends on the Pritzker Family Studio Theatre stage.
Chicago Children’s Theatre is committed to training the next generation of actors and performers. Our Education opportunities strive to reflect the integrity and quality of our mainstage work, so children receive the same skills in our training that is needed by the fabulous performers in our productions.

What Critics Are Saying
“HILARIOUS…DELIGHTFUL…also seasonally spot-on…AS INFECTIOUS AS A HOOTENANNY…a marvelously invested ensemble. Silliness and seriousness exist side-by-side…FREDERICK captures both with wit and humor. Celebrates the imagination, dreams and the ability to truly see the wonder of the world. ***1/2“
