West Loop Classes

Chicago Children’s Theatre’s Older Stages Classes feature our tenacious Acting Series for Grades K-3 in addition to our rotating Masterclasses for Grades K-8. In our Acting Series, students will build the necessary tools for collaboration and communication in the rehearsal room and beyond. In the alternating Masterclasses, curriculum promotes curiosity and expertise in distinct mediums of storytelling.

Bubble Jams Session I | Fall 2021

Get dancing and grooving with your little one at Bubble Jams! This interactive class features live music played by experienced teaching artists. So come jam out to your favorite classic and new songs, show off your best dance moves, and play in a dazzling stream of bubbles! This child/caretaker class is 5 sessions long.

Pre-K Performers | Fall 2021

Get your preschooler stage and school ready! Through theatre games and acting activities, students will build confidence in expressing their creative side while expanding social and motor skills. On the last day of class we will share some of our favorite parts of class with you!

Red Kite Acting and Art: Puppetry | Fall 2021

Created for young people on the autism spectrum, students in this class will take on the roles of both designers and performers. Get ready to move beyond sock puppets and explore more theatrical styles of puppetry! Kids will learn the basics of puppetry and develop their own characters, all while practicing communication and motor skills.

Acting Adventures, Ages 5/6 | Fall 2021

In this theatre class, students will start to explore the creation of character and narrative. This class prepares performers to take the stage and encourages confidence in collaborative play. So come and tell exciting stories, make new friends and create wonderful worlds. This class culminates in an open workshop of the class and short scenes.

Improv in Performance, Ages 4/5 | Fall 2021

In this class, students will learn to shake out the nerves and take the stage as confident and collaborative performers. Improvisation teaches how to become un-scripted storytellers through development of physical, cognitive, and verbal communication. This class culminates in our troupe’s own mini classroom improv show!

Elementary Ensemble | Fall 2021

Tuesdays, 4:30-6:00 PM CST at Chicago Children's Theatre, 100 S Racine
Ready to take your performance skills to the next level? Join a professional Chicago playwright and director in this intensive as we collaboratively write, rehearse, and present a play together. Students will devise their play through a workshop process common in the creation of many new works. This experience culminates in a red carpet performance in CCT's Pritzker Family Studio for family and friends.

Tech/Dress on Dec 15, 16 from 4:30-6:30pm with the performance on Dec 17 at 7pm.

Triple Threat: Musical Theatre | Fall 2021

Tuesdays, 4:30-5:30 PM CST at Chicago Children's Theatre, 100 S Racine
Students will perform scenes, monologues, songs and dances from Broadway and Chicago Children’s Theatre musicals. Through character work, movement study, and vocal exploration students develop essential skills for taking the stage confidently and charismatically. This class ends in a sharing of selected songs and scenes for family and friends.

Tuesday Night Live | Fall 2021

Tuesdays, 5:15-6:15 PM CST at Chicago Children's Theatre, 100 S Racine
Think you've got the funnies? Want to learn how to dish the funnies? We've got you covered. In this class, we will guide students in writing and performing their own sketch show filled with big stock characters, comical turns of events, and commercial parodies. At the end of the session we invite parents and friends to join us for a sharing of select works.

Tumbling | Fall 2021

Tumble your way into Chicago Children’s Theatre and onto the stage! Learn early tumbling skills through exciting games and exercises designed to break your kids out of their shell and prepare them to be adept movers in performance. This class culminates in a sharing of skills learned on the last day.

Through improvisation and creative play, the young artists in this class will devise and perform an original work while learning the vocabulary needed to be a part of any theatrical experience! Collaborators will create unique characters and worlds as an ensemble. Through embodied storytelling, these performers gain narrative-building skills for engaging audiences on the stage and beyond. The last day of class will culminate in the opening (and closing) of a world premiere!

Musical Theatre Song Writing | Fall 2021

Grades 4-6
Wednesday, 4:30-5:30 PM CST at Chicago Children's Theatre, 100 S Racine
This class will focus on writing musical theatre songs. Students will explore different genres of theatre (golden age, rock, lyric etc.) before studying different character tropes and which characters typically sing which songs in theatre (“I want” songs or Act 1 finale etc.) Then they will develop their own character/circumstances and write musical theatre songs to be performed as either solos or in small groups. Some students will focus on lyric writing and those with more musical experience will focus on melody writing. This class culminates in a sharing of the songs created during class.

Grab your little one and join us at Story Sprouts, where we'll bring our favorite stories to life through creative drama, music, and movement! Dive with dolphins and swim with sharks in this fun-filled class for our youngest learners. Through engaging multi-sensory drama activities, this five-week class will support the development of your child’s fine and gross motor skills, their communication skills, and their blossoming creative spirit. This is a child/caretaker class.

Producing the Podcast | Fall 2021
Runs Sep 30 - Dec 9, 2021

Grades 6-8
Thursdays, 4:30-6:00 PM CST at Chicago Children's Theatre, 100 S Racine

Taking inspiration from existing podcasts and radio plays, each student will create their very own episode from start to finish. We will brainstorm concepts, make choices about genre, design a structure, and write content. Then, participants will learn how to record their pieces on a variety of devices, make edits using Audacity or GarageBand (both will be taught), and add music and sound effects. Finally, we will cover how to share podcast content online. This is the class for burgeoning producers/directors/content creators excited to take on full creative and technical control of a project.

Please note: This class requires students to dedicate time outside of class to work on their projects. Instructions will go out between classes, and our teaching artist will be available to answer any questions that come up. Please have either Audacity (PC and Apple) or GarageBand (Apple) downloaded on your device (both are free). Designed for young people on the autism spectrum, this class will engage students in fun and challenging improv games and activities. Improvisation teaches young people how to become un-scripted storytellers and provides an opportunity to practice essential collaboration and listening skills. During the last class, we’ll play some of our favorite improv games with you!

Puppetry in Performance | Fall 2021

Grades 2-3
Thursdays, 5:15-6:15 PM CST at Chicago Children's Theatre, 100 S Racine
In this multifaceted theatre class, students will explore the relationship between text and world building. Collaborators will learn about different types of literature and puppets through an exciting international and historical lens before diving into the creation of their very own piece complete with poetry, song, shadow, panoramic scrolls, and more. This class teaches skill building in collaboration, literacy, and fine motor skills. On the final day, students will have a presentation of their original show for family and friends.

Story Sprouts: My Backyard | Fall 2021

Grab your little one and join us at Story Sprouts, where we'll bring our favorite stories to life through creative drama, music, and movement! From colorful gardens to cute caterpillars, there is so much to explore in our backyards. In this creative play class for our youngest learners, we’ll act out our favorite parts of beloved nature-centered stories, explore early music concepts, and throw a backyard bash right in our classroom! This is a child/caretaker class.
