Chicago Children’s Theatre’s Older Stages Classes feature our tenacious Acting Series for Grades K-3 in addition to our rotating Masterclasses for Grades K-8. In our Acting Series, students will build the necessary tools for collaboration and communication in the rehearsal room and beyond. In the alternating Masterclasses, curriculum promotes curiosity and expertise in distinct mediums of storytelling.
Saturdays, 8-9:30 AM CST on Zoom
Join this online international class co-led by Chicago Children's Theatre and Mumbai's The Pomegranate Workshop as we create a piece of theater centered around the UN's Sustainable goals. Students will explore topics such as sustainable and safer cities, better income distribution, climate conservation, clean water, renewable energy, preservation of life in oceans and on land and gender equality before they write and bring a show to life through poetry, puppetry, and movement. The final piece will screen at Pomegranate's WeCreate 2021 online festival. Note: this class will be limited to 6 students from the United States and 6 students from India.
Mondays, 4:30-5:30 PM CST on Zoom
In this class, each student will write their very own play. The young playwrights will craft a blueprint for an extended narrative including a detailed structure, developed cast of characters, and thoughtful world building. Plans in hand, the class will delve into the writing process, examining style, pacing, figurative language, and more. Of course, the best part will be meeting every week to write and act out pieces of our plays together!
Tuesdays, 4:30-5:30 PM CST on Zoom
Think you can’t do improv from home or play games? Missing storytelling with your friends in class? Join friends through Zoom to play improv and theater games to get our creative juices flowing and have some fun! In this class, we will create our own Improv Troupe complete with a ridiculous name and lots of jokes. Mustaches and flannel shirts are optional.
Wednesday, 4:30-5:30 PM CST on Zoom
Join your friends as we transform ourselves every week to the fun, scary, and wild creatures that we encounter on stage and in the movies. In this class, students will learn the basics of stage makeup and practice a new concept and application every week. This class will be different from the Winter Makeup class by adding more fantasy-based looks. So what will you become? A 90 year old version of yourself, an animal from the jungle, or a mystical creature from the depths of the ocean?
Thursdays, 4:30-5:30 PM CST at Chicago Children's Theatre, 100 S Racine
Ready to hop on stage and create a original show with friends? Join us in this 10 week intensive as we collaboratively write, rehearse, and perform a mini play together. Students will devise their play through a workshop process common in the creation of many new works. This class culminates in a live performance for families.
Thursdays, 4:45-5:45 PM CST at Chicago Children's Theatre, 100 S Racine
In this class, students will write, act in, and film their very own theatrical movie in CCT's Pritzker Family Studio under the direction of one of CCT's veteran teaching artists. This fast-paced class will incorporate many types of storytelling such as scene work, poetry, and puppetry. Students will then film and their movie for a screening & talkback for friends and family. This class in-person, but the movie screening will take place over Zoom.
