Sensory-friendly performances

Chicago Children’s Theatre works tirelessly to enrich the community through diverse and significant theatrical and educational programming that engages and inspires the child in all of us. CCT also honors a special commitment to families facing economic challenges and children with disabilities.

“It is not often that we are able to take field trips or be accepted as we are. You made each and every one of my students feel welcome and like they belonged.”-Ashley W. Teacher

CCT offers sensory-friendly performances with sensory modifications and pre-show resources for some of our main stage productions. These tailored performances directly address the needs of families raising children on the autism spectrum. While the integrity of the performance remains the same, certain elements are modified in an astute effort to create a welcoming and inclusive audience experience for each child.

CCT makes sensory modifications to elements of the production including:

  • Reduction of loud sounds
  • House lights stay on creating a dim light in the audience for the entire show
  • Audience members are free to talk, make noise and/or be active
  • Extra staff and volunteer support
  • Family bathroom available
  • “Quiet Room” available during the show

Pre-visit resources

  • Sensory Guidance
  • CCT Social Story
